Belize Celebrates 214th Anniversary of the Battle of st. George's Caye by Belizean News
On September 10th, Belizeans annually celebrate the Battle of St. George's Caye. In this battle, lasting a total of seven days, the forefathers of the coutry defeated the Spaniards. Now the people of Belize celebrate the landmark battle of their coutry. The major celebrations happen in Belize City. This year held even more importance; a new Queen of the Bay was primed. An induction of a new queen combined with the usual celebrations of music and dance on September 10th made for a very festive national holiday in Belize.
Since Belize's national independence day is actually September 21st, it is hard for me to realize the relevence of the celebrations of the 10th. However, I do hold their festivities in a high respect. Just as the United States celebrates Independence Day, Belizeans celebrte the Battle of St. George's Caye. Hearing of the cultural dances and music involved on this holiday interests me; it makes me realize even more so that American culture is often a mixture of many cultures.
