In December of 2012, the rape of a young 23 year old girl sparked protests in India for more security for women. After the horrific incident, women of India began to truely question their rights on safety. The regional Shiv Sena party in India has distributed 3 inch long knives to women supporters to help protect themselves. The women are told to "keep it in their purses" and use it the same way they would use it to cut vegetables. Police have investigated and found the knives not to be dangerous.
I enjoy this article and gaining knowledge about women's rights in a country where women are suppressed. It suprises me that the police found these knives not to be dangerous, however, I am very glad that they did. This is a very large step down the long road of equality for women in India. I am interested in seeing how many other regional groups begin handing out knives and if the national government will approve once it spreads to a wider level of the population.
This issue pertains the the political aspects of India because of the boldness of the regional group, Shiv Sena. The government has often denied women of their rights, so it is a very abrupt change in course for them to allow the knives to be in the possesion of women. The national government could easily punish the regional group along with take away the knifes from the women. On the other hand, this event could lead to a slow change in how women are seen in India.
