Urban Geography
Top five most populated cities: 1) Bamako 2) Sikasso 3) Kayes 4) Mopti 5) Segou
Population of the largest city: 1,994,604
Estimated size of the next four largest cities unsing the rank size rule: 2) Sikasso-997,302 3) Kayes-664,868 4) Mopti-498,651 5) Segou-398,921
Actual populations of the next four largest cities: 2) Sikasso-221,327 3) Kayes-153,163 4) Mopti-106,260 5) Segou-104,881
The rank size rule is extremely invalid in Mali. All of the estimated populations are at least three times the true population. This overestimate comes from the fact that Bamako, the most populated city in Mali, is so much more populated than the other cities, it is considered a primate city. Segou has the cosest emimated population with the rank size rule out of India's second, third, fourth, and fifth most populated cities. Although this is true, it is still too far off to argue that the rule is valid in India.
